Understanding Indoor Air Quality in Dallas: What Most Homeowners Ge...
Indoor air quality testing has become something of a buzzword in North Texas, and for good reason - but there's a considerable gap between what most Dallas homeowners think they know about their home's air and what the data actually reveals. After conducting hundreds of home health assessments in Dallas, I've noticed patterns in what people miss, what they misunderstand, and what genuinely surprises them when we measure the actual concentrations of particulates and volatile organic compounds in their living spaces.
The science here is straightforward, though the solutions sometimes aren't. The EPA Indoor Air Quality guidelines establish that indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air - and in some cases, those concentrations reach 100 times higher. That's not hyperbole. Those are measured values from real homes, many of them right here in Dallas County.
What follows is a breakdown of the most persistent misconceptions I encounter, backed by actual measurements and what they mean for your household. We'll also cover the warning signs that suggest it's time to move beyond guesswork and get some real numbers.
Myth #1: If It Smells Fine, The Air Quality Is Fine
Reality: Your nose is a terrible instrument for detecting most air quality problems. Completely useless, actually, for some of the more concerning contaminants.
Consider volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These carbon-based chemicals off-gas from building materials, furniture, and household products at concentrations measured in parts per billion. Some have odors - that new carpet smell, for instance, is largely 4-phenylcyclohexene at around 1-10 micrograms per cubic meter. Others, like formaldehyde, have distinct smells only at higher concentrations (above 0.1 ppm), well past the threshold where sensitive individuals experience respiratory irritation.
But here's where it gets interesting: Many VOCs have no odor
